Subject: URGENCY
It is now 8:12PM on New Year's Eve and the IT team is going home unable to complete their work because no-one from Engineering is available. Nobody in Engineering seemed really interested or concerned that we might not make our promised start dates.
The IT Team has been working days, nights and weekends for the past several weeks to get us ready for the Performa 1.0 roll-out, including UAT. They have been operating above and beyond the call of duty.
The Engineering Team, with some exceptions, does not seem to feel the same sense of urgency. There is a feeling that we can take our time, leave out critical configuration details, delay our deadlines, and have IT, the rest of the company and our customers wait until it is convenient for us to get around to solving problems. Essentially, it seems to imply that it's not a big deal to break our promises. This is not about technical competence, which is unquestionable, but about poor attitude and teamwork.
I believe that I try and strike a reasonable balance weighted towards supporting family and activities outside the workplace. But there are times, such as now, that I require people to put their work first. You all have had plenty of notice as I have been talking, planning, cajoling and warning since late October that this would be crunch time. The future of this company depended on your complete attention, professionalism and dedication for the past and over the next several weeks. After all, it is your work that is one of the support pillars for the rest of your busy lives.
If you are not up for the task, let me know now. Otherwise, I unequivocally expect teams I manage to meet our deadlines and deliver the best quality product we possibly can.
